Public Consultation Meeting of the Trans-Federal Task Force on Optimizing Biosafety and Biocontainment Oversight – December 8-9, 2008

The Task Force’s process of deliberation and consultation included soliciting perspectives and input from key stakeholders and the public. A public consultation meeting was held December 8−9, 2008. This meeting allowed the Task Force to obtain individual input from members of the public and scientific community on important aspects of biosafety and biocontainment oversight of high and maximum containment laboratories in the United States.  Panelist presentations and discussions at the meeting focused on a series of questions about which the U.S. Government wanted to solicit specific comment.  These questions concerned objectives for improving the current oversight framework and options and recommendations for achieving the objectives, with the overall goals of enhancing biosafety/biocontainment oversight and protecting worker safety, public health, agriculture, and the environment without hindering the progress of research.
