Previous Meetings

2021

  • December 16, 2021: The NBSB met in public (virtually) on December 16, 2021 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM ET to discuss high priority issues related to national public health emergency preparedness and response, as well as review draft recommendations that support the development of the next edition of the National Health Security Strategy.
  • September 28, 2021: The NBSB will meet in public (virtually) on September 28, 2021, from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. Eastern time to discuss the strategy and planning for the National Special Pathogen System and other high priority issues related to national public health emergency preparedness and response.
  • May 26, 2021: The National Biodefense Science Board hosted a public teleconference to discuss new recommendations to HHS that addressed remaining public health emergency preparedness and response challenges. In light of the numerous health emergencies and disasters that have affected the United States since 2007, NBSB will continue to provide recommendations related to health emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.


2020

  • May 13, 2020: The NBSB held the public teleconference previously scheduled for April 28, 2020 on May 13, 2020. The purpose of this teleconference is to discuss the updates from the Disaster Medicine and All Hazards Science Response Working Groups.


2019

  • December 3, 2019: The upcoming meeting of the National Biodefense Science Board will focus on an after action review of Crimson Contagion, a National Level Exercise; eastern equine encephalitis virus; accelerating the development of vaccines and therapeutics to address emerging infectious diseases; and more.
  • September 11, 2019: The purpose of the meeting was to gather information to develop expert advice provided by NBSB and guidance to the Secretary on scientific, technical, and other matters of special interest to HHS regarding current and future chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological agents, whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate.
  • June 10-11-2019: This meeting of the National Biodefense Science Board focused on early results and progress reports from four new programs that were designed to strengthen disaster health preparedness, response and recovery: the Regional Disaster Health Response System; BARDA DRIVe; ASPR’s new Incident Management Team; One Health; and the National Biodefense Strategy. As part of the evolution of the National Disaster Medical System, NBSB discussed disaster veterinary medicine and National Veterinary Response Teams. The board addressed issues facing the medical community, including disaster medicine training for community physicians and advance practice physicians and learn about ways to develop and operationalize core competencies for disaster medicine.


2018

  • December 13, 2018: The NBSB public teleconference was dedicated to the discussion of recommendations on two topics: 1) strategic improvements to the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) and 2) implementation of the National Biodefense Strategy.
  • September 12, 2018: The NACCD and NBSB held a joint public meeting via teleconference on September 12, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT. This public meeting was dedicated to the NACCD and NBSB’s deliberation and vote on the ASPR Future Strategies Work Group (FSWG) Report.
  • June 26-27, 2018: The NPRSB held a public meeting on June 26, 2018, and a joint public meeting with the NACCD on June 27, 2018. The meeting on June 26 was devoted to inaugurating incoming NPRSB members and thanking retiring members for their service. The remainder of time will be dedicated to identifying key areas of analysis and recommendations for the NPRSB and the NACCD to advise the ASPR and the Secretary.
  • May 10, 2018: The NPRSB and NACCD held a public meeting via teleconference on May 10, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM EDT. This public meeting was dedicated to the NACCD and NPRSB’s deliberation and vote on the joint tasking of the Future Strategies Work Group.


2017

  • December 7, 2017: ​The NPRSB held a public teleconference on December 7, 2017 from 12-1 pm EST. The purpose of the public teleconference was for the NPRSB to vote on the Future of the NPRSB Letter to the ASPR.​
  • April 13, 2017: The NPRSB held a joint public meeting and ASPR Day with the NACCD on April 13, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET. This public meeting included presentations on the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response priorities, the National Health Security Strategy and stakeholder updates.
  • April 12, 2017: The NPRSB held a public meeting scheduled on April 12, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM ET. This public meeting was dedicated to the swearing in of one new voting member and the re-appointment of five existing members
  • January 9, 2017: The NPRSB held a joint public meeting via teleconference with NACCD on January 9, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET.  This joint public meeting was dedicated to the NPRSB and NACCD'S deliberation and vote on the Youth Leadership report.


2016

  • July 29, 2016: The NPRSB held a public meeting via teleconference dedicated to the NPRSB’s deliberation and vote on the PHEMCE Medical Countermeasures Preparedness Assessment report.
  • June 17, 2016: The NPRSB held a joint public meeting via teleconference with the NACCD dedicated to the NACCD and NPRSB’s deliberation and vote on the youth leadership task letter received from the ASPR.​
  • May 26, 2016:  The Board held a public meeting dedicated to the NPRSB's deliberation and vote on the PHEMCE MCM Preparedness Assessment Task Letter from the ASPR.


2015

  • March 30, 2015: The Board held a public meeting dedicated to the NPRSB’s deliberation and vote on the findings from the ASPR Future Strategies Working Group.
  • January 30, 2015: The Board held a public meeting dedicated to swearing in the six new voting members who will replace the members whose terms are expiring.


2014

  • April 29, 2014:  The Board acknowledged retiring board members and swore in new members.  The Board voted on recommendations from the Future of NBSB Working Group and on the new task, ASPR’s Future Strategies. 
  • April 23, 2014:  The Board discussed and presented the findings in the Community Health Resilience Report, and voted on the Community Health Resilience recommendations.
  • January 10, 2014:  The Board deliberated on the Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise (PHEMCE) Strategic Preparedness Goals Report and voted on recommendations from the report.


2013

  • October 31, 2013: The Board discussed and voted on the findings from the Situational Awareness Strategy Implementation Plan Working Group and National Health Security Working Group.
  • September 12, 2013: The Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response introduced a new Federal Advisory Committee to the public.  The Situational Awareness Working Group provided an update and the Board Chair briefed the members on its reports and accomplishments.
  • June 25, 2013:  The Board discussed and voted on the Community Health Resilience and Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures tasks.
  • April 2-3, 2013:   The Board presented the recommendations from the Health and Healthcare Situational Awareness Strategy and Implementation Working Group and voted on the findings.  The Board received presentations on the following:  PHEMCE Strategic End-Points and Preparedness Goals, All Hazards Science, HHS Adoption of NBSB Report from the Disaster Mental Health Subcommittee, and an Overview of Community Resilience Issues.  The April 3 meeting was a collaborative session between the Board  and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response Board of Scientific Counselors.


2012

  • September 17, 2012:  The Board held a closed session to review the draft PHEMCE SIP and provided feedback to the PHEMCE SIP Steering Committee.
  • June 25-26, 2012:  The Board received presentations on the PHEMCE Prioritization Framework as well as the Implementation Plan in a closed session on June 25, 2012.  The ASPR tasked the Board to review and evaluate the Public Health and Healthcare Situational Awareness Strategy and Implementation Plan in the June 26, 2012 meeting.  The Board received presentations on the following: Biosurveillance, Existing Situational Awareness and Strategies, Situational Awareness: Global Perspective, and Existing Reports on How to Improve the Biosurveillance Enterprise.
  • May 23, 2012:  The Board was briefed on the PHEMCE Prioritization Framework and asked to provide input on the framework in a closed session.
  • March 29, 2012:  The Board provided feedback on the PHEMCE Strategy in a closed session.
  • February 28, 2012:  The Board discussed the PHEMCE SIP goals and objectives pertaining to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and priorities for other HHS agencies.
  • February 2, 2012:  The Board acknowledged retiring members and swore in new members.   The ASPR tasked the Board with reviewing the PHEMCE Strategy and Implementation Plan (SIP).


2011

  • October 28, 2011:  The Board discussed and voted on the AV WG report and recommendations.
  • September 22, 2011:  The Board received presentations from the Chair and Co-chair of the Anthrax Vaccine (AV) Working Group (WG) and discussed the WG findings.  The Board received a presentation on the Reauthorization of Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA).
  • April 28, 2011: The Board discussed the recommendations from the All-Hazards Science Response Working Group.  The Board received presentations on the following: Reflections of Rejoining ASPR and Addressing Pediatric Populations’ Access to Medical Countermeasures (MCMs).
  • January 25, 2011:  The Board acknowledged retiring members and swore in new members.  The Board discussed the components of a science response to disasters.


2010

  • September 22, 2010: The Board received presentations from the DMH Subcommittee and the Future of the NBSB WG, and discussed their findings and recommendations.
  • March 26, 2010: The Board held a public meeting to discuss the PHEMCE and review the five sections and recommendations of the draft report.
  • February 10, 2010: The ASPR charged the Board with reviewing the PHEMCE. The Board discussed the recommendations from the Medical Countermeasure Markets and Sustainability Working Group report, provided feedback, and voted on the report.


2009

  • November 13, 2009: The Board received presentations from the Disaster Mental Health (DMH) Subcommittee on recommendations for H1N1. A discussion and vote on their findings followed.
  • October 14, 2009: The Board reviewed the DMH Subcommittee behavioral health considerations and recommendations for H1N1 discussed in a previous meeting. Members also received an update on H1N1 pandemic.
  • September 25, 2009: The Board held a public meeting to discuss H1N1 surveillance. The session included two panel discussions on H1N1 vaccines and H1N1 antivirals.
  • August 14, 2009: The Board received updates from HHS representatives on H1N1 countermeasures, vaccine planning, antivirals, and diagnostics.
  • July 17, 2009: The Board reviewed the findings from the June 18-19, 2009 H1N1 Countermeasures Strategy and Decision Making Forum hosted by the Pandemic Influenza Working Group of the NBSB.
  • May 22, 2009: The Board held a public meeting to discuss issues regarding the H1N1 pandemic.
  • April 22-23, 2009: The Board received a brief overview and update on the following: HHS Role in Biodefense and National Security, Health Information Technology, the National Commission on Children and Disasters, and the National Health Security Strategy.
