Caring for Patients with Ebola in U.S. Hospitals: A Nursing Perspective

Health care organizations across the country are preparing to respond to the possibility of Ebola cases in their communities. Several U.S. hospitals have treated patients with the disease and can provide important information to other health care workers related to personal protective equipment, staffing models, and critical care nursing. During this COCA Call, clinicians will learn about the clinical management experiences of nurses who cared for patients with Ebola at Emory Healthcare and Nebraska Medical Center. Ebola Preparedness for Hospital Based Emergency Providers

Hospital based emergency providers are invited to participate in a conference call with leaders from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on preparing for possible Ebola cases. During this call, leaders will discuss the evaluation and management of patients who present with possible Ebola Virus Disease and provide an overview of the Identify, Isolate, Inform: Emergency Department Evaluation and Management for Patients Who Present with Possible Ebola Virus Disease guidance and algorithm. This call will also provide an opportunity for participants to provide comments and ask questions.

Webinar: Ebola Preparedness for Healthcare Coalitions

  • November 7, 2014: This call focused on HCC engagement with coalition members and ways for them to assess and understand the personal protective equipment (PPE) inventory; HCC purchase of PPE for members rather than facility-by-facility purchasing; and healthcare coalition leadership involvement in Rapid Ebola Preparedness (REP) team visits to assist with regional health care system planning.

  • October 23, 2014: Experts from HHS reviewed the Checklist for Healthcare Coalitions for Ebola Preparedness, which provides practical and specific suggestions to ensure healthcare coalition members are able to detect possible Ebola cases, protect employees, and respond appropriately. This webinar also provided information for healthcare coalitions related to some of the key issues currently facing U.S. hospitals, including lessons learned from Dallas; an overview of updated personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations; PPE considerations (including proper putting on, removal, and disposal of PPE); and considerations for managing staffing concerns.

Hospital Preparedness Call: Preparing Your Healthcare System for Ebola

Hospital executives, emergency management directors and safety officers across the United States participated in a conference call with leaders from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on preparing healthcare systems to protect health and safety should an Ebola patient present at your facility.  The call included representatives from the HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the HHS Intergovernmental and External Affairs Office.

  • November 10, 2014: Ambulatory health providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, behavioral health professionals and other outpatient clinicians, participated in a conference call with leaders from HHS on preparing healthcare systems to protect health and safety should an Ebola patient present at your clinic or facility.
