Training & Career Development

At ASPR, we want you to own your career development. Regardless of where you are or where you want to be, there are many internal and external tools and trainings ASPR makes available to assist in your development.

Gaining New Experience: Job Details

ASPR employees may elect to participate in job details and other volunteer and inter-agency collaborative work opportunities
to expand an employee's knowledge base and advance their careers.  A detail is a temporary assignment to a different position   for a specified period when the employee is expected to return to his or her regular duties at the end of the assignment. job details and other volunteer and inter-agency collaborative work opportunities to expand an employee’s knowledge base and advance their careers.  A detail is a temporary assignment to a different position for a specified period when the employee is expected to return to his or her regular duties at the end of the assignment.

Federal agencies can allow details of their employees within a

business training concept
department for up to 120 days. Also allowed are intra-agency details in increments of 120 days when approved by the head of the department.

Leadership Development

The ASPRing Leaders Program is a 9-month leadership program for entry-level individual contributor (non-supervisory) career employees. The Excellence in Government Fellows Program is an 11-month program for mid-level employees, and the Leadership for a Democratic Society is a 1-month executive leadership training program. All programs are free to employees who are nominated or accepted.

Excellent Classes and Resources

ASPR’s internal Learning Management System offers more than 3,000 courses and 19,000 books on both technical and intrapersonal skill development. ASPR also offers employees membership to Lynda.com, the leading online learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology, and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals. In addition, ASPR offers a mentoring program to facilitate developmental partnerships and interdepartmental communication for personal and professional growth.

Many employees opt for external professional development trainings and continuing education opportunities. ASPR maintains a list of recommended vendors and courses available, but employees are free to choose other external training sources.

Collaborative Career Development

All ASPR employees should complete an Individual Development Plan or IDP to guide their development. IDPs are used to empower ASPR employees to maximize their performance and achieve their full potential.
