Disaster Preparedness Planning for Dialysis Dependent Individuals

Dialysis and kidney transplant patients must take special preparedness measures to ensure their own health and safety during and after disasters. A disaster is an event that can result in significant harm to lives and/or property, as well as disruption in daily activities. In an emergency, patients should:
  • Stay in contact with their dialysis provider or transplant provider
  • Begin the 3-Day Emergency Renal Diet (not a substitute for dialysis)
  • Know how to reach their Physician and Nephrologist
  • Tune into media reports on the emergency updates (via radio, television, social media)
  • Know how to contact their local emergency management office for specific information
