SNS-Held Ventilator Resources

The Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) can provide a variety of ventilator models to supplement state and local supplies in an emergency, and each ventilator has different features and modes of ventilation. Check out the training resources below to learn more about specific ventilator models.

Additional Training Ventilator Training Materials

To learn more about using ventilators during an emergency, the SNS has partnered with the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) to create the Project XTREME cross-training video and a video on mass casualty ventilation and the SNS. For easy access to training materials on some of the ventilator models supplied by the SNS, download the Ventilator Training Alliance app.

Ventilator Training App

Put ventilator training materials in the palm of your hand! The Ventilator Training Alliance has developed the VTA App for iOS and Android. The app includes resources on products by various manufacturers of ventilators that are currently contained in the SNS: GE Healthcare, Hamilton Medical, Philips, and Vyaire.

Mass Casualty Ventilation and the Strategic National Stockpile

Pandemic events present multiple challenges to the health care environment and the ability of the respiratory therapist to provide mechanical ventilation to all persons in need. Learn more about providing mechanical ventilation in mass casualty events, the respiratory therapist’s role, and the SNS allocation process.

You can watch this video for free, or earn CRCE credit through AARC.

Project XTREME

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality developed a video, titled “Cross Training Respiratory Extenders for Medical Emergencies (Project XTREME),” to train health care professionals who are not respiratory care specialists to provide basic respiratory care and ventilator management to adult patients during a public health emergency or mass casualty event to assist respiratory therapist meet critical staffing needs. Principal target groups for the training are physicians, physician assistants, and nurses.

The video includes six training modules with interactive quizzes to test viewers’ knowledge. The modules cover:

  • infection control
  • respiratory care terms and definitions
  • manual ventilation (using hand-held bags)
  • mechanical ventilation
  • airway maintenance, and
  • airway suctioning
