National Biosafety Stewardship Month

NIH announced that October 2015 was National Biosafety Stewardship Month. National Biosafety Stewardship Month is a period during which institutions are encouraged to reinforce their attention to biosafety policies, practices and procedures.  In 2015, NIH is encouraging participating institutions to focus their efforts on sustaining and enhancing a culture of safety/responsibility in life science research laboratories. The themes of this year’s National Biosafety Stewardship Month relate to training, engagement, and transparency.

The NIH has promoted awareness about this initiative through an NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts notice. In addition, Dr. Carrie Wolinetz, Associate Director for Science Policy at the NIH, has sent a memo to the biosafety community regarding the National Biosafety Stewardship Month initiative, stressing that they have an important role to play in the success of this effort.

NIH also developed a set of Frequently Asked Questions about National Biosafety Stewardship Month which provides further information.
